How would you change your day-to-day life if everything you've dreamed of is just around the corner?
This is a thought that I've been chewing on a lot lately. After the blood, sweat, and tears of the last two years, including the aforementioned "physical therapy" phase, I'm finally able to breathe again and to enjoy the sweetness and magnificence that is my life—and with newly gained compassion, patience, insight, and wisdom.
And wonderfully sweet, exciting adventures lie so close in store, I can brush them with my fingertips!
But I've also had a jarring, eye-opening realization in the last week: what does it MEAN if these long-awaited blessings are just around the corner? Am I ready?
In my heart of hearts, I know that my life's on the brink of major, major changes once more. Remember how I felt this... and then this happened? (And events unfolded to make my life infinitely better than anything I could've imagined or realized?) I've gone through enough rounds of this to recognize the pattern.
Which means it's time to work with a laser-like focus on making weak things become strong.
Last week I read this Psychology Today article that examined why/how "bright girls, when given something to learn that was particularly foreign or complex, were quick to give up—and the higher the girls' IQ, the more likely they were to throw in the towel. In fact, the straight-A girls showed the most helpless responses... [because] more often than not, bright girls believe that their abilities are innate and unchangeable, while bright boys believe that they can develop ability through effort and practice."
Sigh.
This article hit me profoundly because that is the story of my life! I've always been very, very bright—and, ultimately, it's been detrimental. I have limited myself SO much by not pushing past the limits of my comfort zone and only playing to my strengths. If something doesn't come naturally to me, I just avoid it or brush it off: "I'm just terrible at sports." "I can't do math to save my life."
My eyes are so painfully opened and aware of my weaknesses that I've ignored for this very reason. There are certain things that I've just given into, more or less—knowing I could do better but settling for this complacent mediocrity because, to some degree, I guess I don't believe I can do it. Sad, sad, sad.
Thankfully, the article goes on to discuss what is my new goal: "No matter the ability—whether it's intelligence, creativity, self-control, charm, or athleticism—studies show them to be profoundly malleable. When it comes to mastering any skill, your experience, effort, and persistence matter a lot. So if you were a Bright Girl, it's time to toss out your (mistaken) belief about how ability works, embrace the fact that you can always improve, and reclaim the confidence to tackle any challenge that you lost so long ago."
Examples abound of friends who have persevered over major obstacles to achieve great things, or who push past their disdain of the work to enjoy the result that work inevitably brings, whether it be running or school work or health issues.
If they can do it, I can too.
Right? In theory?
So, here's to sucking it up, buckling down, and working on becoming amazing. Or, as Sara Bareilles puts it, being BRAVE.

Pop! Goes the -Sicle
Have we ever discussed my ice cream obsession? Seriously. It is my Achilles' heel of treats. Cool, creamy, delicious -- and with such a dizzying array of varieties, it's not uncommon for me to have five different flavors in the freezer at a time. (Especially Tillamook ice cream. If you haven't tried it, RUN to your nearest WinCo and snatch up the chocolate-peanut butter or the marionberry pie flavors. Trust me. You'll thank me later.)
Well, my waistline is not thanking ME for this obsession!!! I've re-gained one-third of the weight I lost last year (and truthfully, it's probably more because I lost muscle mass in there as well -- thank you, holidays + first semester of grad school!). And seeing as I purged my closet of all my "fat" clothes, unless I want to go nekked (which is not so much socially acceptable, not to mention awk-ward...), I need to bounce back into shape and fast.
Enter no sugar/grains/soda time.
Not exactly an easy feat, right? I survived yesterday, so it can be done... but it'll take some serious discipline. The toughest part will be giving up desserts, but where there's a will, there's a way. Enter these bad boys:
Ah, yes. Homemade popsicles. I'm still messing around with ingredients, but it's a fun process! So far I've tried:
- Dark chocolate almond milk
- Coconut milk - crushed pineapple ("If you like pina coladas...")
- Coconut milk - fresh strawberries (which look GORGEOUS in the molds - I need to snap a picture!)
- Coconut milk - pomegranate juice (interested to see how this tastes - might need to add pomegranate seeds to the next batch)
I discovered a handy way to get a lot of varieties going, too -- when one batch is done, you can pull each popsicle from the handle, wrap it in plastic, and then pop it back in the freezer. Perfect for portion control! I'm wondering if there's a way to insert a stick to make it work, but I don't mind just eating it from a bowl like ice cream, really.
Other flavors I'm pondering are:
- Chocolate - banana
- Chocolate - dried cherry
- Chocolate - strawberry
- Coconut - lime
- Pomegranate - berry (blended like a smoothie, maybe sneak in some greens?)
- Lavender lemonade (sweetened with Stevia) (and it might sounds weird, but trust me on this. I had lavender-honey ice cream in Seattle a couple years ago, and it was A-MAZ-ING!)
Any other flavor suggestions? How do you curb your cravings with healthier solutions?

A Diabolical Diet-tribe
As part of the Thirty, Flirty and Thriving Initiative, I've started working out again and dieting ("Operation: Skinny Me").
Two days in.
And... oh... hungry. So hungry.
Friends, I have been so good! Thanks to this handy-dandy food calculator at MyFitnessPal.com, I've been tracking every single morsel that crosses my lips, accountable for calorie counts and overall nutritional value. And - bonus! - when I work out, it adds more calories to my daily allowance. 40 minutes on the elliptical = 600 extra calories. Score! I haven't eaten through my entire day's allotment yet.
But today is... one of those days. Early into the office, leave early enough to run a couple errands, then babysit a friend's adorable daughters for a few hours before dashing off to Institute (as part of Operation: Meet People).
This being hungry thing? So over it.
And it's not like I don't have food in the fridge, but... the other half of yesterday's Cafe Rio salad? Gross. Hard-boiled eggs? Gag me. Another handful of (oh-so-delicious) sesame honey almonds (imported from Trader Joe's in NorCal)? I'd rather not.
What will do the trick?
Macachocochicoconut.
Macachoco-what you ask?
Macachocochicoconut:
- Macadamia nuts - protein! Totally healthy.
- Chocolate chips - there's gotta be some dairy in there, right? Calcium?
- Coconut - a fruit, for sure.
Well... so what if it probably contains more calories than my last two meals combined. It's not in MyFitnessPal's database. Guess that means I can't enter it in... which means eating this deliciousness never happened. Right?

Fighting Flab with the Force
May the Force be with your in your Jedi journey to fitness!
The video is a little long, but there's a major twist around 4:00, so stick with it.
(And yes, my job is turning me into a mega-geek - I found this on a site called geekologie. This is what happens when your job is to research Web 2.0 / social media for the computer/tech enthusiast audience all day. I've even learned how to do XML coding for RSS feeds, for crying out loud!)
More blog posts to come, I promise... if you want to see what I've been up to for the last few days, go to my friend Heather's blog (my *BESTEST* friend, we're really super good friends, hahaha) - she's posted on a bunch of stuff I did over the weekend (using my *amazing* 4th of July photos, no less!).

So Long, Sugar!

Ah, sugar. How I have loved thee...
For 25+ years, you've always been there to sweeten a rough day, or to wish me "Happy Birthday" with your saccharine, buttercream goodness. But alas, you've done nothing but cause me stomachaches and heartbreaks, and so it's over. Done. Finito.
Indeed, this morning I awoke with the resolve out of nowhere to swear off sweets. It's better for us all.
So please, next time you see me reaching for that gooey brownie at Break the Fast, slap my wrist and remind me to not sacrifice what I want most for what I want in the moment. My swimsuit will thank you for the help.
PS: And no, that doesn't mean dropping my blissful baking - it just means there's more for everyone else to eat!
