My "Joseph" Family

"Yeah, well, I’ve got a dream too - but it’s about singing and dancing and making people happy. That’s the kind of dream that gets better the more people you share it with. And, well, I’ve found a whole bunch of friends who have the same dream. And, well, it kind of makes us like a family.” - Kermit the Frog

When I was 16, our high school put on Bye, Bye, Birdie - and when I came home from the cast party after closing night, sobbing inconsolably, my mother freaked out and thought something tragic had happened to me. No... I was just so sad that the wondrous joy of the show had come to a close.

Bye, Bye, Birdie held the spot as my favorite show experience - until May, when we started rehearsals for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Right off the bat, it was clear that this was going to be a special show. The talent, the lack of egos, the warmth and affinity and respect everyone involved had for everyone else - it started off wonderfully, and its magic has only grown for the last three months.

Remember how I debated whether this was a good idea? Oh man. No doubt about it. This show has fed my heart and soul. I adore the people I've met and the fun I've had, singing and dancing and performing. Last night we went out as a cast, and I happily sat in the corner there at Wingers and observed. It warmed my heart, just being around these great people, watching how much we all enjoy one another's company. Our group has such a range of ages and backgrounds. Some folks joined the cast as replacements midway through rehearsals; some, like the "hairy Ishmaelites," came on board only in the final few weeks. Yet each person has been a huge component of the whole experience. Each personality has contributed to the fun, and each player brings his or her own strengths, whether it be phenomenal dancing or pulling hilarious faces that leave the audience giggling. And let's not overlook those who aren't on stage but who make the show pop with lighting, sets, costumes, music direction and choreography, and, of course, direction and vision. It's been a delight.

I love musical theater. Music, in and of itself, has a phenomenal ability to touch the heart and to convey emotions that words alone fail to reach. Music has always been an intrinsic part of my life - it was ever-present in our home growing up, and I've always had tunes playing more often than not. Combine that aural power with the visual storytelling of dance - also rife with emotional power - and then layer in lights, sets, costumes... and poof! You're transported to another world, if only for an hour or two, carried away in a story that runs a gamut of emotions. Whether it be Broadway tours of Wicked and Les Miserables or a local high school production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, musical theater brings more joy to my heart than just about anything - and that joy grows exponentially when I'm the one on stage, pouring my heart and soul into the story.

Throughout childhood, I said I'd do community theater someday - and I have. And I do. It makes me delightfully happy - so much so, in fact, that I'll continue dancing (taking ballet two days a week and tap two days a week) and singing (I'm resuming voice lessons with my college vocal coach in September). If I'm going to continue with it, I'm going to commit to it, work to refine and develop my abilities, and do it right.

Meanwhile, tonight we get a night off before launching into the final three performances of Joseph. I can't wait to get back on the stage with my Joseph family - and at the same time, I want to savor the experience and not have it end too quickly. Just the thought of it ending made me misty-eyed yesterday. It's been fun to watch in the Facebook feed as all of us castmembers have added each other, wanting to maintain a connection. The show might end, but the friendships won't.

It's so funny - my time living in Lehi wasn't the greatest, honestly. (More to do with circumstances than with the town itself - it's a wonderful community!) And while I enjoyed Singin' in the Rain, it wasn't my best experience, either. Not bad, but not great. The wonderful director of Singin' in the Rain came to the show last night, and seeing him got me thinking about all of this. I'd felt strongly that I needed to do that show, and yet it wasn't a phenomenal experience for a myriad of reasons.

However, it was because I lived in Lehi that I ended up doing Singin' - and through that, I met my dear friend Paige, the amazing assistant director for Joseph who talked me into auditioning. Those two things laid the groundwork for me to do this show - and if for nothing else, that makes those 10 months worth it, warts and all. I really admire, respect, and enjoy the folks I've met in the Lehi Arts Council, and if they'll have me, I look forward to doing many more shows with them in the years to come. Next summer they're doing Crazy for You, which is all Gershwin numbers (my fav composer!) - can't wait to dust off my tap shoes and get to work!

And in the meantime, if you're around Utah, come to Joseph!!! You won't regret it. Check out the great reviews we're getting - and come see what all the buzz is about. The play runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lehi High School. Hope to see you there!

Mis Enchiladas Suizas Famosas

Once upon a time, when I was a BYU coed, I taught myself to cook. Mind you, I was raised in a foodie family and received my first cookbook at age 8 - but that was just messing around.

In college, I began to cook. Like, for sustenance. Or to impress that cute guy I had my eye on (way to a man's heart, right?). Well, my ploy to snag a hubby through culinary prowess obviously hasn't paid off, but in the meantime, I've amassed a pretty decent repertoire of recipes, ranging from easy-peasy casseroles to gourmet awesomeness (ummm, pear-and-shallot-stuffed pork loin in a Port wine-fig reduction sauce, anyone? Holla!).

This recipe is one of my mid-range favorites. It was my go-to "impress That Guy" recipe in college, but I've moved onto more daring recipes, and this one's become a favored comfort food. The assembly process takes some skill, since you have to let the tortillas soak in the salsa long enough to get soft (so as to not crack when you fold) but not for too long (in which case they fall apart). And be prepared for messiness in this stage, too. Truth be told, if either of those extremes happens, whatever. You're going to slather them in sauce and cheese, so no one will be the wiser, right?

So, without further adieu, I give you my enchiladas suizas recipe (for which I can't take credit - my stepmom found it from the LA Times. I've just given it exposure!).

Enchiladas Suizas Deliciosas
* 1 large can green sauce (preferred brand: Juanita's or Juanas) - by the way, this never leaves me with enough for on top, so I always grab an additional small can for that. Your choice.
* 3 c. loosely packed shredded, cooked chicken
* 3 1/2 c. grated Swiss cheese, divided [or a lil' more if you like lots of cheese]
* 1 1/4 c. sour cream
* 1/2 c. chopped cilantro
* 8 corn tortillas [whatever, I usually stretch the filling for 10]

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Combine chicken, 2 1/4 c. cheese, 3/4+ c. sour cream, and all but 2 Tbsp. cilantro. Add 1 1/2 c. sauce. Pour remaining sauce into frying pan; barely simmer.

Soften tortillas in sauce, one by one (about 45 seconds). Stack finished tortillas on plate. [Honestly, I find it easier to just assemble the enchiladas as you go than to stack the tortillas - they get too mushy and messy that way!] Fill each tortilla with about 1/2 c. of chicken mixture and roll up.

Place side by side in a 9x13 pan. Pour remaining sauce over enchiladas and sprinkle with remaining cheese [I always do this liberally!]. Bake uncovered at 400 degrees until sauce is bubbling and cheese has melted and browned slightly, about 25 minutes.

Serve with remaining sour cream and cilantro - and be ready for some mouth-watering awesomeness!!!

If you want a tasty side dish, I recommend my friend Mishy's Spicy Black Beans from her cooking blog, The Enchanted Spoon. They're easy to whip up and sooooo delicious. Just be careful if you want to double the recipe - it took more than double the cooking time for the liquid to reduce. Single batch is easy as written, though.

Enjoy!!!

"Operation: Klondike" and the Awesomeness of Julie

Speaking of fun films from our ward party Saturday night, I just found out that my amazingly talented friend Julie's stop-motion flick is on YouTube. Check it out:

Julie was also the co-creator of "Fast Sunday," the film I posted last night. Seriously, Julie is so creative, she blows me away!!! I'm always so in awe of her designs and creations, whether they be puppets (who then star in some pretty awesome music videos), furniture or T-shirts. She's so incredibly talented and fun! Definitely one of my favorite friends down here. :)

Oh yes - she did, in fact, create puppets of the guys from Mythbusters. Amazing, huh?

Speaking of - have I ever shown off Julie's two puppet music vids? Okay, seriously, I HAVE to show you these! This first one, "Father Figure," was for a contest the band, Army of Anyone, was having - and, yes, Julie totally one that! She got an autographed bass guitar from her favorite band. Not too shabby...

(P.S. - I got to puppeteer the mustachioed bassist in the band's group scenes. Can I just put on the record that puppeteering is way harder than it looks? Soooo fun, though!)

If you want some more laughs, check out the "making of" vid, "Army of Monsters."

The bassist is the incarnation of Julie's story-telling persona "The Englishman." Ummm... you have to see that one to believe it. There is no explaining "The Englishman." Words don't do it justice!

And then this one was just for fun, I think. We actually did a movie premiere night for this one, which was soooooo fun!!!

Again - seriously, how much do I love my friends?! I'm so in awe of them (and by "them," I probably mean you, too, assuming that if you're reading my blog, you must be my friend) 24/7 and just marvel that I get to have friends of such a high caliber who are so interesting, smart and talented.

Last night in his CES fireside, Elder Richard G. Scott mentioned the importance of having friends who will help you attain and maintain a moral high ground. When he was at that point in the talk, I looked around my friend Christina's living room at 15 people who I admire and love so much (even though I didn't know everyone as well as I know, say, Christina and Cort and some who I've known for years and years now), and I was like, "I'm good to go!" Not that one should ever be comfortable and think they're beyond such advice - but what I mean is, being in my ward, it's not difficult in the least to make solid friendships with quality people, because there are wonderful people everywhere you look! Again, I am so blessed and grateful to be a part of such a group.

Keep being so amazing!!! Love you guys!!!

Emerging New Artist: Courtney Jones

I just discovered an amazing emerging artist today: Courtney Jones.

Okay, I didn't discover her on my own - she's actually the sister-in-law of Annalise, one of my college roommates, and I've actually had one of Courtney's CDs in my collection since Lisey gave it to me, like, five years ago.

But Courtney's amazingness slipped through the cracks of my musical memory 'til Annalise posted something about it on Facebook, and I clicked over to the Courtney Jones YouTube channel to do a little listening while working.

I was blown away!!!

Courtney's voice is fantastic, and her style is so in line with what I love listening to these days. If you're into the whole female singer/songwriter thing like I am, then you HAVE to go check Courtney out. Her latest album is available on iTunes - I will definitely be downloading it tonight!

Baby, Baby!

I'm off to a delightful day at the Del, but first, I just had to share with you this adorable video my uber-talented friend Julie made - enjoy!
