The A to Z of CJ

Not to go snagging fun content from friends... but Becky posted this, and it actually seemed like a fun one of these survey dealios. So, hey, why not! Some fun Friday fodder. It's been ages since I did one of these anyways. Enjoy...

Age: 28 (but I have hit that point where it takes a sec to answer - 27 still rolls right off the tongue, and I'm now closing in on 29...)

Bed Size: Twin. When it's just me in the bed, no need to take up that precious floorspace.

Chore You Hate: Dishes. Hands down. Childhood horror flashbacks.

Dogs: If you let me count my parents' dogs, then two - Shep (a Sheltie and the love of my life!) and Maizy (a Skye terrier and the CUTEST dog you've ever seen!). Admittedly, I miss the dogs more than I miss the people - but that's because I can't keep in touch with dogs via Facebook and phone.

Essential Start of Your Day: Diet Pepsi. Sad but true. And some good music to set the tone for the day.

Favorite Color: Coral (anything that's that mix of pink and orange - so vibrant and fun!)

Gold or Silver: Depends on the day

Height: 5'10

Instruments You Play: Do my vocal chords count?

Job Title: Marketing writer

Kids: Someday eventually. The plan was 4-6 by the time I'm 37, but seeing as I won't get started 'til 30 at the earliest... we'll see.

Live: My life's in Utah, but my heart's still in Orange County.

Mom's Name: Wendy. Or Betsy, really, since I'm closer with my stepmom than my real mom. Genetics, schmenetics.

Nicknames: Peachy Chris (for a brief time in high school), Chrissy (but only my mom can call me that). Nicknames have never stuck for me, although middle-aged men take to calling me "dear," "honey," etc. (insert eyeroll)

Overnight Hospital Stays: None! Never been admitted to the hospital except when I made my earthly debut.

Pet Peeve: Grammatical and spelling errors - it's "voila!" not "wah-lah," people! "Grateful" not "greatful"... must I go on?

Quote From a Movie: "South Bend, it sounds almost like dancing."

Right- or Left-Handed: Righty

Siblings: 1 of each - older brother, younger sister

Time You Wake Up: Sometime between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. - depends on the day's schedule

Underwear: Mormon-style; over the shoulder, down to the knees

Veggie You Dislike: Carrots. Not really a fan, but I will eat them if I must.

What Makes You Run Late: Cramming too much into every available minute possible. It is a terrible habit - I always seem to think things will take less time than they do!

X-Rays You Have Had: My finger when I bruised the bone as a child (yes, did you know you can do that?!), my ankle from an ultimate frisbee injury in college, and my teeth time and time again.

Yummy Food You Make: What yummy food don't I make? Cookies, brownies, cakes, etc. have been my main cooking focus for years, but I've branched out into real food in the last couple of years and now make some pretty killer chili, enchiladas suizas, black beans, pork tenderloin, and just about anything else that sounds good. Including homemade hummus. Mmmmm... Oh, and I've recently conquered my fear of pie crusts. It's a huge accomplishment - thank you, food processor!

Zoo Animal You Like Best: In theory, monkeys. In practice, they're never as amusing as I expect... in which case... hmmmm... African wildlife like giraffes, zebras, lions, etc. are captivating.

The ABC's of Christa

Stacers tagged me with the ABC Tag Game, so here it goes!

A- Attached or Single? Single
B- Best Friend? Karen - but also Rebecca, Tabitha, Haas, Christina... it's a long list.
C- Cake or Pie? Cake
D- Day of Choice? Saturday
E- Essential Item? Cell phone
F- Favorite Color? Purple, currently - often red, too
G- Gummy Bears or Worms? Ooooh, that's a toughie. Bears. I agree with Stacy - chocolate-covered cinnamon bears. Too bad they're only at BYU!
H- Hometown? La Crescenta, California
I- Indulgence(s)? Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory - my current obsession is the 30th anniversary cheesecake, which is layers of cheesecake and chocolate cake. To DIE for!
J- January or July? Haha, depends on my location! July, I s'pose
K- Kids? Hopefully 4-6 someday (although the longer it takes, the fewer I'll be happy with!)
L- Life is incomplete without? The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sorry to be all Molly, but it's true...
M- Marriage Date? Hopefully in the next three years? I'd rather not be 30 and single still...
N- Number of Siblings? 2 - an older brother and younger half-sister
O- Oranges or Apples? Oranges. Unless we're talking apple cobbler or baked apples.
P- Phobias or Fears? I get really nervous on bridges or overpasses, or being stopped beneath an overpass. Blame it on growing up in earthquake territory!
Q- Quotes? “This is the true joy in life, to be used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, to be thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap. To be a force of nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am a member of a community and as a member it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can before I die. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch that I want to make burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.” - George Bernard Shaw
R- Reason to Smile? The Gospel of Jesus Christ, the beauty of the earth, living in Southern California
S- Season? Autumn
T- Tag 5 People? Kellie, Liz, Amor, Kaylynn and Adrian/Emily
U- Unknown Fact? In high school I once snuck onto the set of an MTV pilot in Malibu with a couple of guys I met that day, and we pretended to be extras for a rave scene. They would have let us stay and get paid for it, too, but my mom was LAME and made me come home. That's what she gets for dropping me off at a leadership conference reunion in Westwood and telling me to find a ride home! (I mean, seriously, what kind of mother drops her 17-year-old off in West L.A. and tells her to get a ride with a stranger? Crazy lady!)
V- Very Favorite Store? Target! It's my happy place!
W- Worst Habit? My addiction to Diet Pepsi
X- X-Ray or Ultrasound? Ultrasound - it's not what you think! It was of my thyroid. I've never broken anything, but I did get an X-ray once. Didn't enjoy it much.
Y- Your Favorite Food? Lobster crepes or calamari tacos from Taco Mesa
Z- Zodiac? Virgo (and I fit it all too well)

(PS - Stace, we're a lot alike! I guess that would be why we're friends, lol...)

Photo Tagged!

Laura tagged me for the fourth-folder, fourth-picture game, so here we go:
Oddly enough, this is a scene Laura will remember well - it's from when she and I went to L.A. to watch Band from TV play at Griffith Park's Autry Center this summer. It was too much fun!!! The music was pretty fun - but I mostly just geeked out at seeing HayLo up close and personal (Hayden Panetierre and Milo Ventimiglia of Heroes fame - I love that show!!!).

So... hmmmm... who to tag this time? I keep trying to change it up. Let's go with Aubrey S., Amor, Kaylynn, Kristen M., Kristyn, Cassie, Stacy and Adrian and Emily.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to go into the fourth folder in your photo files and post the fourth photo with an explanation. I look forward to seeing your picture posts!

Quirky Eights

Random pic, I know - this is a photo of a photo that I have in my cubicle. It's from Valentine's Day 2004 with Karen. It makes me happy.

What a crazy few days I've had this week! For some reason, I feel really unnerved - not sure if that's driven by job stress or continued annoyance with That One Guy (I hate when I'm annoyed and then have no resolution with the person, because then the annoyance just lingers like a gaping wound...), but goodness, I have not been the At-Peace Annie of a week or two ago.

My guess is that it's that whole "opposition in all things" idea at work. Conference weekend was too blissful - this week has to make up for it.

Anyhow, I feel so popular! I've been tagged by not one but two fellow bloggers - so I'll do all the tiggety-tagging responses in one tidy post.

First, Kellie tagged me with this list of eights:

8 Favorite TV shows - this is a toughie, since I'm not a big TV watcher...
1. The Office!!!
2. Heroes
3. Veronica Mars
4. Arrested Development
5. Friends
6. Scrubs
7. Good Eats with Alton Brown or other fun Food TV shows
8. Pretty much anything on Turner Classic Movies

8 Favorite Restaurants...
1. Taco Mesa (inventive fresh-Mex chain in Orange County)
2. Cheesecake Factory
3. Corner Bakery
4. Cafe Rio (I soooo miss it!!!)
5. Does In-N-Out qualify as a restaurant?
6. Outback Steakhouse
7. Bistro Aix in San Francisco (just give me their chocolate cake - it's PHENOMENAL!!!)
8. Bad to the Bone BBQ, San Juan Capistrano

8 things that happened yesterday... (It's been kind of a mundane week, and I don't have cute kids doing silly things - my apologies if these are lame)
1. We had a Maples Digital Media Group team meeting at work, which meant that our design team came in from Anaheim. This was fun because the creative director is also the guy for whom I used to babysit - whose brother is one of my buddies. Yesterday was the first time we sat next to each other at the meeting, and it was like total flashbacks of sitting with his brother in Ward Council a few years ago, cracking jokes here and there. Totally made the meeting more fun.

2. I read lots of blogs. I do this every day. It's addicting.

3. Ooooh! I was really, really craving my favorite garlic shrimp casserole, so I made it for the first time. This took trips to two stores to get all the ingredients, but it was worth it. My methods need some refining, but for a first attempt, it was a winner. I used brown rice and added frozen asparagus. Yum. And I have it all to myself, which means lunch today for me! Yay!

4. I got into a tiff with my roommate about whether or not the garbage can lid belongs in the kitchen sink. She put it there a week ago because she thought it needed cleaning - but didn't want to be the one to clean it, so there it remained, with my roommate hoping one of the others of us would get the hint. I cleaned it after doing the dishes, but I adamantly think that something which covers a bag of rotting food should be set in the sink where we prepare food. So I also thoroughly disinfected the general sink vicinity and pressed my roommate to never, EVER put the lid in the sink again!!! Gross!!! But she refused to concede, so we're deadlocked. (Roommate #3 agreed with me, at least.) I love my roommates - I really do. But it's moments like this that I look forward to a home of my own.

5. Tuesdays are "Business Watch" days for me, when I work on my column for Friday's paper. I needed some new material, so I drove around to a couple of really cool new businesses - an indoor BMX ramp park and store in Lake Forest, and a supercool video gaming destination in Ladera Ranch. Like, so cool that I totally want to go there on a date and play video games. Which is nothing short of a miracle, because this is me we're talking about. I don't play video games. Like, ever. So that's definitely saying something about the awesomeness of Game On.

6. I spent most of my workday working on elements to improve our company's Web site. If you want to see the in-process site, click here. I get really excited when I find changes. Hopefully the site will be ready to roll next week.

7. To help storyboard our capabilities presentation, I drew the concepts from the whiteboard in Paint to add to a PowerPoint. It brought back childhood memories of playing in drawing programs. I'll spare you the pathetic pictures, but needless to say, there's a good reason why I'm a writer, not a graphic designer.

8. And, last but not least, I caught a little bit of the new 90210. I think this could be a new addiction. Suzette also got us watching Lincoln Heights, too. Pretty good.

8 things to look forward to..
1. Meeting and marrying The One. He's going to be pretty danged amazing if I deem him worthy company for time and all eternity. Although I'm sure there will be times when I feel like strangling the poor sap. Seriously, Heavenly Father had quite the sense of humor when He made men and women so danged different - and yet we need one another. It's an eternal learning process.
2. Creating a wonderful, solid family.
3. Finally going to some of the places I've always wanted to see, like Manhattan, Washington D.C. or Europe.
4. Seeing all three of my high school besties in November!!!
5. Going to Disneyland tomorrow with my friends.
6. Spending Saturday in San Diego - I've been in desperate need of a Del day.
7. Finishing this never-ending Web site project. I can't wait to see the end product!
8. Retiring someday in favor of being a full-time mom. That will seriously be one of the happiest days of my life! I love, love, love my job, but I know there are things of such greater consequence out there - all in time...

8 things I love about Fall..
1. The autumn color palette - so warm and rich!
2. Piling on the blankets at night
3. Thanksgiving - my favorite holiday
4. Fall foods - I am such a sucker for pumpkin stuff and cranberry stuff. And, oh, my favorite stuffing I make every year - yum! I can't wait to get a slice of the pumpkin-pecan cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory - mmmmm...
5. Sweaters
6. Colorful leaves - what we get here is such a paltry imitation of what other places get, I know, but I do like seeing the golden leaves.
7. The energy that comes - it's such a new beginning!
8. Halloween fun, especially the annual Hitchcock movie with my friends

8 things on my wishlist...
1. A tall, dark, handsome and brilliant man, preferably with blue eyes. I dig those baby blues.
2. Some John Wayne DVDs - preferably Stagecoach or Without Reservation. My collection is sadly lacking The Duke.
3. A cast-iron skillet so I can make some blackened catfish
4. Some more free time!!!
5. Voice lessons
6. Dance lessons - preferably jazz and tap
7. A sewing machine
8. John Krasinski

And then Missy tagged me with six quirks - these were hard to think of!

1. I don't drink plain milk. I'll drink chocolate milk and eat ice cream 'til the cows come home (pun intended, teehee), but I don't drink milk by itself. I had milk with cereal for the first time this summer, and it was okay (i.e. didn't make me gag), but other attempts to drink milk have always failed (i.e. hugging porcelain).

2. My nervous habit involves playing with my jewelry - tugging at my earrings, playing with a necklace.

3. Every morning my routine involves stopping at Ralph's for a Diet Pepsi from their deli counter. I've become pretty friendly with the deli manager, Monica. She's really sweet. I love hearing about what her kids are up to.

4. I have a very set bedtime routine that involves an eye mask, certain playlists from my iPod, some linen spray and my teddy bear. I'm able to survive without all of this while traveling, mind you, but when at home, that's what I do. And I'm trying to enjoy it as long as I can, because somehow I'm guessing a husband won't go for being serenaded each night by Peter Gabriel or Nick Lachey.

5. I don't hardly ever buy bread. I know it's a staple for the rest of the world, but I don't ever eat it fast enough, so I don't waste the money anymore. I do, however, have a small arsenal of soup in the pantry year-round.

6. I hate driving with my shoes on. If I'm in flipflops, flats or heels, I'll usually kick them off and drive barefoot.

Okay, tagging time... I pick Tabitha, Liz, Rebecca, Heather, Jeremiah, Stacy, Brittny and Hayley!

Blogfest 2008!!!

Hi, friends!

So, for the last couple of months, I just have not been in the mood to blog - hence the lack of in-depth, Christa-centric posts.

Well, folks, it's your lucky day! I've been thinking about the blog all day and am going to catch up as much as my battery will let me (yeah, didn't bring the cord home - whoops!). Enjoy!

To kick things off, Heather tagged me for this a while ago - here are my answers:

JOYS:
1. Spending quality time with quality friends - you know, when you really catch up and connect.
2. Watching the amazing, ethereal beauty of art in the making, whether it be viewing a Broadway show, browsing breath-taking paintings in a museum or watching a talented poet read her works. The arts are, hands down, my biggest passion - thanks, Mom, for instilling that in me! 3. Curling up and watching a classic movie, whether it be a new (well, new to me) find from Netflix or an old favorite from my collection.
4. Spending time in the temple - especially that pure joy you feel at the end!
5. Making people laugh or smile, somehow brightening their day. I used to focus on this a lot more... I really should get back to that!

FEARS:
1. Honestly, becoming my mother. If you knew her, you'd understand. ;) (For the record, she once said she'd never read my blog... so if she does, well, sorry, no offense! Love you!)
2. Being in the wrong place when there's an earthquake or something. Seriously, any time I'm on an overpass, stuck in an underpass, crossing a bridge, etc., I just hold my breath and pray for safety!
3. Waking up 10, 20, 30 years down the road and finding that I'm still struggling with the same things - not being able to conquer my (overwhelmingly many) weaknesses.
4. Failing in any and every thing.

GOALS:
1. Conquering the aforementioned weaknesses.
2. Giving more of myself to others, not being so self-centered.
3. Get married in the temple someday, hopefully before hell freezes over...
4. Settle into a profession that I love and pays well.

CURRENT OBSESSIONS:
1. Watching Veronica Mars. I'm so addicted, it's not even funny!!! More on that later, hopefully...
2. Shopping - especially H&M. Again, I'm addicted. I'm becoming such a shopaholic - which is bad for my bank account, but great for my wardrobe.
3. Blogging and reading friends' blogs. And starting another blog... again, more on that later! :)
4. Organizing my room. It's been such an ongoing project for the two and a half years I've lived here, but I think I'm almost there...
5. Sour Patch Kids. For whatever reason, I can't get enough of 'em lately!

Okay - I choose Rebecca, Tabitha, Brittney and Brittny, Annalise and both Aubreys. Tag! You're it!

I'd love to hear what all of you have to say!!!

The ABC's of Christa

I saw this on Karly's blog and thought it would be fun to fill out - enjoy!

And keep posted... I just might have some major, major news in upcoming weeks...

A-Attached or Single: Single, and quite enjoying it!

B-Best Friend: Karen McMullin Rains, the coolest person on the planet. Seriously, I love this girl! We met in the dorms fresh out of high school and have been tight ever since. Even though she lives in upstate New York, we still talk on the phone a few times a week, and she knows me better than anyone.

C-Cake or Pie: Cake, in a heartbeat. I'm not a pie fan. (Oh, PS, have you seen Ace of Cakes on the Food Network? It's amazing!)

D-Day of Choice: Thursdays. I know, random - but Thursday is the day after deadline, so it's a chance to breathe, plug away at the upcoming week, almost always go to lunch with my friends, and then Thursday night is the only night I don't have something scheduled... except to watch the awesome NBC lineup!

E-Essential Items: Day planner, contacts, cell phone, lip gloss, laptop with its wireless card, Diet Pepsi.

F-Fact or Fiction: Fiction. I enjoy nonfiction and documentaries and all, but there's a lot to be said for curling up with a good novel or a fun flick.

G-Graduation: High school was 2000; BYU was... well... I left in 2004, walked in 2005 but finally finished my independent study class in 2006.

H-Hometown: La Crescenta, a nice suburb in the foothills of L.A.

I-Indulgences: DVDs (I love 'em!), ice cream, retail therapy at the Gap.

J-January or July: July, for sure!

K-Kids: Someday... but not too soon. I'm totally not there yet, as I'm reminded each week when I babysit. They're so cute and fun, but yeah, not yet!

L-Life is Incomplete Without: The gospel and good friends and family.

M-Marriage Date: Eventually someday... I'm not really worrying about that one.

N-Number of Siblings: 1 brother and 1 sister.

O-Old or New: I love old stuff, like really old buildings or old cars. The history involved fascinates me!

P-Phobias or Fears: Bodily injury (hence why I avoid team sports!), failure, letting down a loved one.

Q-Quotes: Wow, there's a ton - I love quotes. To keep it simple, "The chiefest source of unhappiness in life is sacrificing what you want most for what you want in the moment." Something like that.

R-Reason to Smile: Each day we have the opportunity to start over again and do better than the day before!

S-Superhero: Iron Man, aka Tony Stark. It used to be Superman, but dude, have you seen "Iron Man"? Amazing!!!

T-Transportation: My white 1999 Altima, Alfredo. He's a winner!

U-Unknown Fact About Me: I once snuck onto the set of an MTV pilot in Santa Monica with a couple of guys I'd met that day at a leadership conference reunion, and we pretended to be extras in the rave scene. We could have stayed for the shoot, too, but my mom flipped out and ruined the fun. Bet you didn't know I could be so spontaneous and cool like that! ;)

V-Vacation: I love San Francisco and seem to go once a year - at least I have for three years running! My top destination, though, is my grandma's cabin near Yellowstone. That place is so dear to my heart. And I'm going in three weeks!!!

W-Worst Habit: Procrastinating and making excuses. I mean, to me, they're reasons for behavior... but to everyone else, they sound like excuses.

X-Xavier or Magneto: Xavier, of course! Go X-Men!

Y-Your Favorite Food: Calamari tacos or tostada from Taco Mesa... mmmm... basically anything from Taco Mesa, really!

Z-Zebra or Leopard: Ummm, leopard print. And yes, I recognize the lameness of the question I made up, but there aren't many Z options out there!

Quiz Time!

Heather emailed me this quiz this morning and said I'd be most likely to respond - so, here it is.

If you blog, I want to see your answers! (And if you don't blog, I still want to see them.)

Maybe you'll learn a few things you didn't know about me, maybe not! But it does make you think about yourself. The directions are at the end.

Four jobs I have had in my life:
* Stadium security at BYU's football and basketball arenas
* Barista at Tazza, an coffee place in La Crescenta
* American Heritage TA (loooooooved it!!!)
* Cashier / super scooper at BYU's Creamery on Ninth East

Four movies I've watched multiple times:
* Singin' in the Rain
* The Philadelphia Story
* Breakfast at Tiffany's
* Sound of Music

Four places I have lived:
* La Crescenta, CA
* Seattle, WA
* Provo, UT
* Laguna Niguel, CA

Four T.V. shows that I watch:
* The Office
* Heroes
* Scrubs (only sometimes)
* Anything on the Food Network when I'm at my parents' house - but, somehow, only when I'm there. It feels weird watching it at my apartment.

Four places I have been:
* Cleveland ROCKS!
* Yellowstone National Park (countless times)
* Mount Rushmore in South Dakota
* Palmyra, New York (plus Niagara Falls)

Four People who e-mail me:
1. My mother
2. Melanie (mostly when we're planning stuff)

Four people I think will respond:
* Can I wimp out and say I haven't a clue? I mean, who actually reads my blog? ;)

Four places I love to shop:
* Gap (which is most definitely NOT the same as Old Navy, Heather!)
* Target
* Amazon.com
* Kohl's

Four Things I am looking forward to in the next 12 months....
* Going to the cabin for a week. A WHOLE week. I haven't taken an entire week's vacation since Christmas 2006. It's about time!
* Meeting the love of my life (hey, you never know...)
* Perhaps making it to New York already
* Getting better and better at my job, scooping the Coastline and Indy more!
(Wow, that was a tough one! I feel like life changes so quickly, I honestly have no idea what's ahead in the next year, and whenever I make plans, they always seem to change anyways.)
